CALCUTTA — Devon Ludwig sat on the Beaver Local bench catching a
breather after his second offensive series of the Beaver’s 28-6 win over
Weir.
This would be the only time the senior quarterback would have time to
rest.
Ludwig went on to finish the night 3-of-6 for 145 yards, two scores. He
did throw an interceptions, but also had 112 yards and two touchdowns
rushing.
Coach Rich Wright felt that it was basics that helped him to a big
night.
“He’s got a strong arm and the receivers made some nice catches,” he
said.
On just his first pass attempt, Ludwig went deep down the middle of the
field to fellow senior Ben Adkins for a 79-yard scoring play.
With Adkins sandwiched between two defenders, the signal caller put the
ball where only his wide out could get it.
On Ludwig’s next passing attempt he found Adkins deep again, on what
appeared to be the same play.
But this time, he was wide open and went in for a 49-yard touchdown.
According to Wright, he had no other choice but to throw it on that
third and five.
“They had nine guys in the box and we had to throw the ball,” Wright
said.
Ludwig didn’t make all of his plays through the air though.
His 61-yard second quarter scoring run put the Beavers up 28-6 and they
never looked back.
The Weir offense wasn’t so fortunate though.
Junior quarterback Bryant Davidson was intercepted twice on the night,
first by Matt Clutter and later by DJ Taylor.
Coach Eric Meek was able to find a few positives amid so many negatives
for the Red Rider passing game.
“I thought (Davidson) did a good job in there, he made some good
decisions, he made some mistakes,” he said.
Weir’s lone score came on a fake field goal, as Steven Buffo found
Davidson on a 17-yard play to the back of the end zone.
Another bright spot for Wright’s squad was the return of Ethan Russell.
After sitting out two games with a staph infection, the senior took to
the field to play in his last game as a Beaver.
Released to play on Thursday, Wright wanted to get Russell in the game
one last time.
“We bent some rules, as far as we would never play a kid who didn’t
practice,” he said. “He’s been special to our program.”
Russell was spectacular on a 47-yard punt return that put the Beavers in
scoring position.
This is Wright’s first losing season in his 10 year tenure at Beaver
Local.
But according to the coach, he and his squad will look to come back
strong next year.
“We’re never going to be happy with a 3-7 record. It’s going to be a
long off season. We’re going to fix some things because you’re not happy
with (3-7).”
